What is a silverfish?!

ce188.jpg (25K)

Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) are common household pests.
They are gray or silver in color, with two antennae (or feelers),
six legs, and three long filaments extending from the tail-end.

There are two kinds of silverfish; the silverfish is silvery in
appearance and prefers ordinary temperatures while the firebrat
has a speckled appearance and thrives at temperatures that are
85 degrees F and above. The firebrat lives near radiators,
furnaces and other warm spots. Silverfish feed on any
substance which contains starch including cotton, rayon,
cereals, books, and wallpaper. They do not feed on woolens.
Silverfish are carried into a house by cartons, papers, books,
and magazines that are moved from one building to another.
